NEAR EASTERN POSITION
VERY SATISFACTORY FOR ALLIES. OBSERVATION BY SIR H. HART. "The situation in the Near East is very much better than had been anticipated." said Brigadier-General Sir Herbert Hart, Chief Administrative Officer for the Imperial War Graves Commission in the Near East, who, with Lady Hart, is visiting New Zealand on leave. Following the outbreak of war, said Sir Herbert, everything in the Near East had developed in favour of the Allies and against Germany, particularly' Italy’s decision to remain neutral and the signing of the pact, between Turkey. Britain and Franco. This had meant a hardening up of the Balkan States generally instead of division, which would have been followed by strife. The position in the Near East was very satisfactory and everyone there was full of confidence as to the future. Sir Herbert and Lady' Hart are at present spending several days at Ponatahi.
