GIPSY FAIR BABY SHOW WINNERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The St Luke's Ladies' Guild held a most successful sale of work in the Crown Theatre on Friday. In declaring the Gipsy Fair open, Canon Sykes expressed thanks to all the helpers and to those who had donated goods. The hall was decorated with coloured streamers and each stall had its own distinctive colour scheme. The ladies conducting the stalls were all dressed in gipsy costumes. During the afternoon a baby show was held. Mrs Bon Jury, of Ponatahi. acted as judge and made the following awards: Under eight months: Geoffrey James 1, Allan Pickard 2. Eight to 12 months, girls, Clare Burns and Barbara Haley, equal, 1; boys. Douglas Rogers 1. Twelve to 18 months: Lois McHardy I, lan Hodge 2. Eighteen months to 2 years: Judy Hercock 1. Mesdames J. F. Thompson and G. R. Jury acted as stewards.
At the evening session a short entertainment was staged under the direction of Mrs S. Shedden. The stage was set to represent a gipsy camp and those taking part wore gipsy costumes. Spotlight effects worked by Mr C. G. Bouzaid enhanced the scene. The first item was rendered by the orchestra, Mrs H. G. Carter (piano), E. J. Haigh (bass violin) and A. Carter (piano-accordion). The Gipsy Love Song was sung by Mrs G. Robinson, and the chorus by the troup. Miss Josie Dennes recited “Meg Merrillies” and Miss Dorothy Bennett sang “Play to Me Gipsy.” Miss June Thompson. Miramar, Wellington, assisted by giving several appropriate fancy dances. The closing item, the Hungarian Dance, was well sung by the whole cast which comprised Mesdames Shedden and Robinson, Misses G. Gray, A. Gray, L. Gray, C. Gray, S. Gray, M. Eccles, M. Sykes, T. Bennett. B. Bennett, D. Bennett, B. Shedden, J. Dennes.

Fancy stall, Mesdames C. Shedden. G. Robinson and Misses Stephens and Thompson. Sweet stall, Mesdames Bensemen, Nichols, Misses J. Judd and I. Wiggins. Produce, Mesdames R. Beu. A. Burch, H. Carter and S. Stevens. Flower stall, Miss Oates and Mesdames Balfour and Keedwell. Aprons and jumble, Mesdames York, Hay, Blissett, Fairbrother. Humphrey, Smallwood, Sykes Tearoom. Mesdames Tully. Rees, Blissett and Miss Armstrong. The total takings amounted to over £ll4, which is very gratifying to all concerned.
Guy Fawkes Picnic. The Greytown Scouts, Cubs and Girl Guides, under their respective leaders, celebrated Guy Fawkes day on Saturday. A picnic was held on the property of Mr J. McKenzie on the banks of the Waiohine River. The evening meal was cooked under Scout conditions. The winners of the competition for cooking were Guides C. Farrell and D. Bouzaid and Scouts Eccles and Rees. The best Cub cook was Alan Peterson. A huge bonfire at dusk, the discharging of sky rockets and bangers, and the singing of camp fire songs brought to a close an enjoyable outing.
River Works at Ahiakouka. At the present time Mr F. Dennes is engaged in building a large groyne on the southern bank of the Waiohine River at Ahiakouka. With the use of a modern caterpillar tractor hoist, this work is being done in quick time. As this machine is working near the main road bridge it is a cause of much interest to the public. The ease with which this machine is handled in climbing Hie banks with great loads of boulders is certainly interesting to watch. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs W. Gates left Greytown today for Pahiatua where they will spend a short holiday. Inspector C. Nicholson is at present on holidays. Messrs J. and B. Kiernan will leave for Wellington on Monday on holiday. Mr B. Kiernan will take part in the New Zealand golf tournament which will commence at Miramar next week. Miss Joanna Thomson, of Miramar. Wellington, was the guest of Mr and Mrs S. Sheddon. Main Street, for the 1 weekend.
