VICTORIAN CATHOLICS

CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS

MASSES AND SPECIAL SERMONS. SPECTACULAR PAGEANT PLAY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. MELBOURNE, November 5. A week of celebrations marking the centenary of Catholicism in Victoria ended today with special masses in St Patrick's Cathedral. On Saturday night 60,000 witnessed the presentation of a spectacular pageant play "Credo" at the Melbourne cricket ground. Though heavy rain fell during the afternoon, the weather cleared for the performance. Each day during the week Pontifical High Masses were celebrated in St Patrick's for various sections of the Catholic community, one of the most impressive being that for nuns and brothers of teaching orders. At each Mass a special sermon was preached by a member of the visiting hierarchy, Archbishop O’Shea being the preacher at the Mass for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. The organisers of the celebration said today that the week had been one of the most striking demonstrations of Catholic devotion over held in Victoria.
