SUBSTANTIAL NET GAIN LAST WEEK CONTRAST WITH POSITION IN 1917. EFFECTIVE ACTION AGAINST SUBMARINES. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, November 4. The British merchant navy has registered a net gain of nine ships, totalling 45,000 tons, during the past week after allowance is made for the ships lost by enemy action. These figures are considered to be a remarkably satisfactory record. The above-mentioned gains in tonnage are effected partly at German expense, since the British Prize Court recently adjudged the Ramona and Hannah Boge as lawful prizes, and they are to be requisitioned by the Crown. The other gains are due to ships reverting to merchant marine status and to new construction. The enormous net losses suffered in 1917 through the U-boat campaign are contrasted to the present figures, and it is stated that the position is unlikely to be repeated in view of the reduction of the effectiveness of the present submarine campaign and also the enormous tonnage under construction.
