WORLD REACTION
ALLIED AND NEUTRAL OPINION. A summary of world Press reaction showed that the repeal of the arms embargo is greeted with satisfaction in the Allied and in the majority of neutral countries, said a Daventry broadcast last night. London newspapers emphasise that the repeal shows no departure from American neutrality policy, and is indeed partly prompted by America s firm desire to keep out of the war. The "News Chronicle" says that from the Allied point of view it is probably the most encouraging happening since the war began. The "Daily Telegraph'’ comments on the strong sympathy to the cause of the democracies which is accorded by the repeal.
The French Press also expresses great satisfaction. "Le Jour" says: The session of Congress has ended with a great victory for right and the democratic spirit. The American people have shown that their policy of neutrality does not exclude recognition of the morality of the issues in the war. “L’Oeuvre" says: The new law, besides its material advantage to the Allies. has also a moral significance which is advantageous to their cause. The “New York Times” says that the majority of Congress thought that repeal would shorten the war, thereby reducing the likelihood of America being drawn in. It added that the majority also felt that the embargo was a needless handicap to the democracies and a help to aggressor nations. Tlie smaller neutral nations also approve of the United States measure. A Yugoslav newspaper says: "The nex y Bill will be welcomed by small nations, which have been living in fear and anxiety for years. Allies. One paper speaks of the spontaneous enthusiasm with which the embargo was lifted. Hungarian opinion is that the Bill places the United States in all but active participation in the war, and that it constitutes an outright alliance with the Western Powers. Tn Turkey and Greece there is satis'jh- ' t ag of the Bill.-—By
