NEW COAT TREND

AS SEEN BY HOLLYWOOD. One of the most interesting phases of the advance fashion trend is the coat calendar, according to Edith Head, Paramount’s designer for such stars as Madeleine' Carroll, Dorothy Lamour, Patricia Morison and others. Miss Head says: “In collections for screen purposes, necessarily designed well in advance of fall showings here and abroad, I am backing up my conviction that the continued popularity of the redingots and other coat-dress combinations is certain. For Madeleine Carroll. in “Honeymoon in Bali” for instance, I am using a dressy as well as a "rougher weather” coat in a silhouette which is dress-like. These coats will blend into the lines of either a one-piece frock or a two-piece suit worn underneZh—yet they swing and fit as smoothly and gracefully as’ a wool dress. “Neither of the coats for Miss Carroll has fur triming. I am thankful, and I imagine women everywhere will be, that casual coats, no longer have to have a collar or cuffs of fur to be high style. This turn in the coat trend means that the average woman’s topcoat can be of finer material and better cut than it could be if it were necessary to include the cost of a fur collar. For those girls who are convinced they must have a fur coat, may I say this: Have an all fur coat or one of the inevitably fashionable short jackets. It does not have to be mink! It can be any number of less expensive pelts and still be smart and flattering. But keep your everyday topcoat of plain, good material and be certain that its colour may be matched, harmonised or contrasted smartly to various accessory set-ups."
