Succeeding Mr L. F. Watkins. Mr E. C. Jamieson has been appointed organist and choirmaster of St. Mark’s Church, Dufferin Street, Wellington. Mr Jamieson is at present organist at St. Augustine’s, Napier.
A special memorial service for the late Squadron-Leader Lennox Lamb will be held at St. Matthew’s Church tomorrow night. In view of the fact that he was the first King’s Scout in the Wairarapa, all Scouts and Cubs and former Scouts are asked to be present. The following non-commissioned officers of the Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles have qualified or been recommended for commissions in the Territorial Force: Sergeants J. P. Tredray (Eketahuna), H. M. Laing (Tinui), J. Hutchinson. G. H. Cooper and G. J. B. Morris and Corporal C. M. Monckton. Lieut. I. A. Hart, of Masterton. who is going into camp next week as an officer of the Second Echelon, was farewelled at dinner last night by professional and business men of Masterion. Mr N. Whiteman, on behalf of the assembly, presented Lieut. Hart with a wallet and wished him good luck and a safe return. Several others endorsed Mr Whiteman's remarks and all joined in paying a tribute to Lieut. Hart’s popularity and to his fine standing among the legal fraternity. The death occurred suddenly in Wellington yesterday of Dr Richard Waler Richards. Born in Lansilin, Shropshire. England, the late Dr Richards was educated at Shrewsbury School and- London University. He qualified M.D. in 1892. after taking his M.R.C.S. and L.R.C.P. degrees’ in 1890. During the Great War he served with the British Red Cross in France. Dr Richards gave up practice in Llandudno, North Wales to come to New Zealand about 16 years ago. He settled In Wellington. where he practised till the time of his death. For many years he was doctor to the waterside workers and was divisional surgeon of the St John Ambulance Association. He is survived oy his wife and daughter, Miss E. A. Richards.
The death has occurred of Mr George Herbert Mends, one of the most widely-known residents of the Bay of Plenty, after an illness of several months, states a Press Association message from Tauranga. Born at Awahuri. Manawatu, 65 years ago, he first engaged in farming in the Bay of Plenty 33 years ago. He was flaxmiling on Pongakawa and Paengaroa. commenced farming in a large way on properties in the Paengaroa and Te Puke districts. Mr Mends at various times served on the Tauranga County Council. Tauranga Electric Power Board, Tauranga Hospital Board and Bledisloe Park Board. At the time of his death he was chairman of the Tauranga County Council and chairman of the Maketu centennial celebrations. The death occurred in the Wellington Public Hospital last, night: of Mr David McLaren, a former member of Parliament, for Wellington East, and a former mayor of Wellington. He had a long career in public life in many spheres, and at one time was prominent in the Labour movement. Born in Glasgow in 1872. Mr McLaren emigrated to Wellington, and became a trade union secretary in Wellington before his election as member for Wellington East, in 1908, until 1911. He was a member of the Wellington City Council from 1901-12. and was the first and only Labour mayor of Wellington, from 1912-13. In addition, he was a member of the Wellington Hospital Board for 12 years. During the Great War Mr McLaren was appointed a member of the Military Service Board. He was also a member of the War Relief Association from its inception early in 1914. lie is survived by his wife and a daughter, now resident in London
