WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
SOLWAY-M ANAIA MEETING. MUCH APPRECIATED ADDRESS. (“Times-Age” Special.) A well attended meeting of the Sol-way-Manaia .Women’s Institute was held yesterday afternoon. Mrs S. J. Munn (president) extended a welcome to the members and visitors. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Allan Senr., Catherall Sent’., McMichael and Miss Allan. Mrs McLachlan tendered her resignation which was received with regret. Mrs Reynolds’s report on the recent conference at Martinborough was received with considerable interest, as was the report given by Mrs Scrivener on the Garden Circle meeting. Both ladies were accorded a vote of thanks for their reports. A feature of the meeting was Mrs Cleghorn’s talk on Poland. Every word was followed with keen interest. At the close of her address Mrs Cleghorn was presented with a lily-of-the-valley posy, and warmly thanked for her much appreciated address. The competitions resulted as follow:—Decorated saucer: Mrs Cornick, 1; Mrs Munn, 2 and 3. Smocked apron: Mrs Scriviner, 1; Mrs Cornick, 2. Gingerbread: Mrs Nicholls, 1; Miss McAllister, 2. Meringues: Mrs Nicholls, 1; Mrs Munn, 2. The following is the programme for December: — Sewing, collection of Christmas gifts. Cooking: (1) Christmas cake (not iced); (2) bran muffins. Flowers: (1) Christmas lily; (2) collection of sweet peas. Roll call: A surprise.
The hostesses yesterday were Mesdames G; Allan, Cornick and Woollett and Miss B. Allen.
