CARTERTON
TENNIS CLUB OFFICIAL OPENING TOMORROW. (“Times-Age” Special.) The official opening of the Carterton Lawn Tennis Club courts will take place tomorrow. Visitors will be present front various other clubs. The courts have received special attention and at the moment are in splendid order. It is hoped that the weather conditions will be favourable for the gathering. FAREWELL GATHERINGS PRESENTATIONS TO RAILWAY EMPLOYEES. On Tuesday evening the Carterton railway staff spent a very pleasant time at the residence of Miss Taucher, Belvedere Street, when occasion was taken to bid good-bye to two members of the staff who have received notice of transfer, Messrs G. Potter and Eric Jones. The evening was taken up in playing games, competitions and a sing song. A dainty supper was served and at a suitable interval Mr Potter referred to the many good personal qualities of Mr Jones and asked him to accept a small token of the esteem in which he was held by his comrades. On behalf of those present he wished Mr Jones a very pleasant holiday in the south, and hoped that upon his return he would find his new duties at Levin convivial and beneficial. Mr Jones suitably replied. Mr L. C. Meyrick then expressed the railway servants regret at the coming departure of Mr Potter, who had received word of transfer to Wellington. Mr Potter had been a faithful employee at the railway station and all wished him success in his new position. On behalf of those assembled he asked Mr Potter to accept a small present as a mark of their respect. Mr Potter thanked Mr Meyrick for his kindly remarks and good wishes and said he was sorry to have to leave Carterton, but one had to go where duty called. The evening closed with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Personal Items. Messrs W. Moroney, J. J. Hadley and G. Groube, of Carterton, are visiting Gisborne. ' Mr Eric Jones, of the Carterton railway clerical staff, left on Wednesday morning on his annual leave. He has -gone south to visit his parents at Millerton. He will return to Carterton after his holiday and will then go on to Levin on relieving duty. Mr T. Sullivan, of Wellington, has taken up his duties as stationmaster at the Carterton railway. Mr Alex McPhee left Carterton yesterday anorning by/ the mail train en route for Takapau. Mr McPhee’s brother Jack, is at present an inmate of the Waipukurau Public Hospital Mr G. Potter, a porter at the Carterton railway station, has received word of his transfer to the Wellington railway station. He will shortly leave to take up his new duties. The infant son of Mr and Mrs H. Torrey, of Pembroke Street, Carterton, died in the Masterton Hospital this morning. Much sympathy will be expressed with the bereaved parents. Church Services. Church of England service will be held at Ponatahi at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The Rev. Mr Stent will be the preacher. Mr W. J. Couling, of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, will take for his text on Sunday morning. “When the Song Begins” and in the evening “Life’s Second Half.” Successful Show Exhibitor. Mr M. J. Parker, of Dalefield, who took his Friesian cattle through to the Manawatu Show, was very successful, gaining 10 awards out of 11 entries. Mr Les. Gallon, of Dalefield, was also an exhibitor. The results were as under: —Aged cow, M. J. Parker 1 and champion; 3-year heifer, M. J. Parker 1 and res. ch.; 2-year heifer, M. J. Parker, 1; yearling heifer, M. J. Parker, 1; pair yearling heifers, M. J. Parker 1; junior heifer, M. J. Parker, 2; aged bull, Leo Gallon. 1 and res. ch., M. J. Parker, 2; 2-year bull, M. J. Parker, 1 and ch.; 2year bull. M. J. Parker, 1; yearling bull, Green 1, M. P. Parker 2; Wilbur Cup for group of Friesians, M. J. Parker 1, Les. Gallon 2; Alfafa Cup. for all breeds. M. J. Parker 2; Johnny Walker Cup, for all breeds, 3-year-old heifer, M. J. Parker 1.
