Stewards Often Won From the Back
BY LIGHTNING CHALLENGE ON THE OUTSIDE
PROSPECTS OF GLOBE TROTTER FAVOURED
(BY “CARBINE.”) Many Stewards’ Handicaps at the Canterbury Racing Clubs Riccarton Carnival have been won from the back by a lightning challenge along the outside ofithe leaders. There was no horse at the recent Trentham meeting which impressed more as likely to record such a victory as Globe Trotter, who displayed a great turn of speed in two remarkable efforts, winning the Mainai Handicap after a wellsustained run. and coming strongly from the rear to secure fourth position in the Awatea Handicap. H. Telford has the Safari gelding in good form just now, and he is running much better than he did at Masterton when he failed in the Grandstand ..Handicap. , Globe Trotter cost his owners, Messrs Bonthorne, Long, and Pope, 780gns last July. He is by Safari from Sight Draft, a Paper Money mare, from Gazeworthy by Roseworthy from Gaze. He came from a good sprinting family, and with 7.6 must be given a good chance.
Of the 'South Island horses engaged in the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton next Saturday, the form disclosed by Nightcalm and Lord Nuffield appears to be the best. The former, after running two good races at the National meeting in August, enhanced his prospects by a solid performance at Motukarara last Saturday, when he won the Le Bons Handicap, while the form of Lord Nul’-i field - also suggests that he will be one of the hardest to beat. He has had j only two starts this season, the first at Dunedin, early last month, when he won the Telegraph Handicap, beating Toro Kottra, Strip and Flagman, other Stewards’ candidates, the latter running fourth. At Gore last week, in the Flying Handicap, he looked all over a winner, having charge at the distance, when his saddle slipped and he finished in the ruck. It is reported since that he is also suffering from a damaged fetlock, but it is hoped that the trouble may not be serious.
Beaulivre Prominent in the Betting. Beaulivre has this week become very prominent in wagering on the Stewards' Handicap.
Mo Third Time?
No horse has ever succeeded in winning the Stewards’ Handicap three times, which is the attempt that Paper Slipper will be making this year. Two horses have carried more weight to win. Arrowsmith 9.13. and Glentruin 9.6 in her second year, while Cadland’s 9.5 is the same weight as Paper Slipper has this year. Arrowsmith and Cadland were both six-year-olds when they won which is Paper Slipper’s present age. When he won as a three-year-old he carried 8.5. and last year he carried 8.7’.
Riccarton Events. Except in the hurdle races, fields will be large in all departments at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, which will open at Riccarton on Saturday. Twenty-two horses remain in the New Zealand Cup. but with only four carrying more than list and seven on the minimum, they are not strong in class. Riccarton has six representatives —the top-weight and six light-weights. Other parts of the South Island contribute four, and half the field will come fro n the N h Island, including ' ’ I fxcol- j
An interesting feature of the Cup field is that three horses which earned rehandicaps, on account of their recent winning form, will be starters, but the majority of the candidates have not won since the handicaps appealed. Any more acceptors might have caused trouble, twenty-two being the safety number at the two-mile starting post.
There are fourteen sprinters remaining in the Stewards’ Handicap. They are a mixed lot. with the light-weights including a couple of three-year-olds likely to challenge the claims of the best performers.
The Welcome Stakes will see a clash between North Island and Southern two-year-olds, each side having two representatives that have shown good winning form.
Allowed to Start Unbacked
The record dividend for a race at Gore was in 1898, when Ruth paid £144. She was ridden by her owner, who allowed her to run unbacked. There have been two cases of horses winning without being supported on the machine —Antrim in 1893 and Governor in 1897. In the early days of racing all investments were returned in cases of this kind, but nowadays the dividend would be paid on the next horse.
