N.Z. Cup Candidates at Motukarara
CAPRICIOUS GIVES THE BEST DISPLAY
OTHERS NEVER LOOKED DANGEROUS
(BY “CARBINE.”)
At the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday several New Zealand Cup candidates were seen jout, Capricious giving the best display, just failing to head Wine Card in the chief event. The Night Raid mare did not have the best of passages in the race and can be considered to have been somewhat unlucky. The Wrecker and Spartan ran poor races, fading out of the picture towards the end. Passaform was another who failed to stay the distance on Saturday and never looked a winner.
The Le Bon's Handicap at Motukarara was what may be called a trial run for the C.J.C. Steward’s Handicap. It brought Nightcalm (9.1) iinto the limelight, winning with four pounds more than her Riccarton weight. On the other hand Paper Slipper failed to gain a place, though he was sticking on to get fourth place. However, it was his first start since the autumn and he may do better in the Stewards. Paper Slipper ran unplaced in the same race last year and stripped at Riccarton to win the Steward’s Handicap comfortably. Toro Koura.had every chance to win but was labouring heavily towards the end.
There was a lot of merit in the win of Montessa in the Brackenfield Handicap at Motukarara, as she led all the way and ran out seven furlongs solidly, She carries the same colours as Nightcalm, both being trained by C. Emerson, and she will improve a lot. The Brazen filly will carry 7.13 in the Linwood Handicap against 8.3 on Saturday last. Flame Queen went well under hex' weight, but Asia, though staying on to be third, did not go quite so well- as was hoped Prudent Prince who has accepted for the Apprentices' Handicap at Riccarton, came from a long way back for fourth and should run a good mile. Wine Card provided a surprise at the Motukarara race meeting on Saturday, coming with a late rush to win the J. F. Buchanan Memorial Handicap, a race in which she was second to Dictate last year. She had not won in the interval. This season, Wine Card has shown a glimpse of form over a mile and a quarter. After two unplaced performances at the National meeting, she ran second to Nightdress in the Ashburton Cup, and in September finished well up behind the placed horses in the Geraldine Cup. Outstanding Feats. The feat of I. Tinsley in turning oui six winners at Gisborne recently recalls the fine performance of the late F. Stowe, at Wairoa, 1907, when he was responsible for nine winners in the two days’ racing. W. Kirk, who is now training in Auckland, rode 11 winners at the same meeting. High Caste’s Winnings. High Caste has won £14,105 in stakes, and £12,925 since Mr H. E. Tan cred paid £7OOO for him. A'Cheap Horse. Wings of Song cost his present owner 700gns, and returned £2BO in stakes in addition to being backed as unbeatable. Lady Furst. Lady Furst won from end to end in the Wellington Handicap, and when raised 111 b in the Watkins Handicap ran another good race under 9.0, as she finished a close third to Centrepoise and Yours Truly in the Watkins Handicap. She meets Centrepoise in the New Zealand Cup on much the same> terms as in the Wellington Handicap. Yours Truly comes in on much better terms than when meeting Lady Furst and Centrepoise at Trentham. but requires a strong rider. Lady Furst was got by Siegfried from Vigilance by Lord Qu ex—Watchful, by SignalmanParisite, by Pounamu or Musquetaire— Kie Kie, by Lord of the Isles —Toi, by Diomedes, and traces back to the Man - to taproot. Watchful is also the dam of Watch Officer, a winner of the Wellesley Stakes, sold to an Australian owner.
Over Two Millions In Stakes. Since it came into existence, the Victoria Amateur Turf Club has distributed over £2,000,000 in stakes. The first meeting was held at Caulfield in 1876. May Follow in Stepniak’s Steps. Since costing 2900gns. Beaulivre has won £1985 in stakes. He may follow in the footsteps of Stepniak and win the Stewards’ Handicap, New Zealand Derby, and Canterbury Cup. Paper Money's Progeny. Paper Money mares grew in favour when one of them produced Defaulter. At the Wellington spring meeting Duncannon drew attention to a son of Paper Money as a sire. Duncannon was got by Inflation from Kilcannon. Inflation was got by Paper Money from Fleeting by Boniform. Another son of Paper Money in Autopay has also some promising sorts representing him as a sire. It would perhaps be correct to attribute the success to the great vitality represented by the St Simon line rather than to individual merit. The same applies to Winkie and other representatives of one of the world’s greatest racehorses arid sires. One of the Best.
Sternchase, who won the Belmont Handicap with 9.5 in Imin 27sec, in addition to being a close third with 9.4 to Sleeveless 9.9, and Grey Night 8.0, in the Rimutaka Handicap, ranks as one of the best of his class in the north. The form displayed by Sleeveless in 1 the chief sprint on the last day's card draws attention to Sternchase. He was got by Lord Quex from Enchantment, by Hunting Song from Smoke Concert, the dam of Gallant Fox. In the Spring Plate, to be run at Riccarton, Sternchase is meeting on close terms others to whom he is giving over 2st in a handicap.
Smart Gallop by Bronze Step. A smart half-mile essay by the improving Bronze Step, who accounted for Tosh and Classic, and thus increased her circle of admirers for Whanga-’ rei engagements, was the feature of yesterday’s activity at Te Rapa, when the going on the course proper, well out from the rails, was in splendid order. Worthy of Notice. Royal Chief, Lady Furst and Kilrobe were companions in a mile gallop at Riccarton yesterday. Kilrobe quickly streaked away in front and after passing the half-mile, which she reached in 49 4-5, she was six lengths clear of the other pair, who took 51 2-5 for the first half, and then gradually reduced the gap; Kilrobe was still three lengths to the good at the post, her mile taking 1.42. while the two cup favourites finished abreast in 1.42 4-5. Kilrobe’s effort was worthy of notice, as she stayed on better than expected. Royal Chief was going comfortably alongside Lady Furst, neither being actually seriously ridden out. Riccarton Re-Handicaps. The following re-handicaps are declared by Mr W. P. Russell for the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting:—Linwood Handicap: Verey Lights, 91b to 9.0; Montessa, 61b to 8.5; Hearth, 21b to 7.9. Riccarton Handicap: Wine Card, 41b to 7.11. A Fast Half Mile. At Riccarton yesterday Paper Slipper indicated that his race last week had a beneficial effect and that he will have to be considered for the Stewards’ Handicap by reeling off half a mile in 47 4-5. easily the best, of the morning. His stablemate Shikari, with Khurja as a mate, followed in 49 4-5.
