TANK CORPS

TRAINING AT NGARUAWAHIA. MECHANISING THE ARMY. Mounted divisions stationed at the Ngaruawahia military camps are to be formed into a tank corps and they will not be issued with horses at the camp, stated Major G. 11. Thompson. N.Z.M.C.. regimental medical officer of the 4th Field Regiment. New Zealand Artillery ,in an interview at New Plymouth. The fact that no horses are to be seen at the Ngaruawahia camp has drawn considerable comment. With the advance of methods of warfare, however, the horse is fast losing his usefulness in that respect. Good horses. too, are not as easy to procure as they used to be. No tanks will be used in New Zeaand. but experience is being gained with Bren gun carriers. These weapons were witnessed in action at Masterton earlier this year. In December, the artillery units at Ngaruawahia will go to Waiouru .for battle practice. Live shells will be used. All North Island units will go to Waiouru at some time for battle practice. Those on the South Island go to Springfield.

The keenness of the men was commented on by Dr Thomson. They were buckling into the work and studying hard. One surprising fact was the large number of married men, especially among the officers, many -with children.
