CANADA’S WHEAT CROP
FOURTH LARGEST ON RECORD. WINNIPEG. Canada’s 1939 wheat crop is not only higher than average in quantity but also in quality. The new crop is estimated at 449,058,000 bushels, the fourth largest on record and practically 100,000,000 bushels larger than in 1938. Furthermore, a total of 51.25 per cent of the new crop Red Spring wheat inspected this year since August 1 has graded No. 1 Hard or No. 1 Northern, Canada’s two highest classifications. This compares with 38.81 per cent in the same period last year. Officials of the inspection branch, Board of Grain Commissioners for Canada, have announced that the Dominion’s wheat is grading better than last year’s crop although the 1938 grade was considered good. This year only 36.62 per cent of inspections to date graded No. 2 Northern compared with 42.63 per cent 1 in the same period last year. Inspections of No. 3 Northern or lower grades this year totalled only 12.13 per cent as compared with. 18.56 per cent last year. Amber Durum wheat also is grading better this year, a total of 84.08 per cent of. inspections so far grading No. 1 and No. 2 as compared With 71.3 per cent last year.
The volume of the principal feed crops in Canada are almost unchanged from last year’s production, while rye and flaxseed on larger acreages show increased production. The new oat crop is estimated at 373,132,000 bushels, barley 99,209,000 bushels, rye 16,549,000 bushels, and flaxseed 2,294,000 bushels. The main hay and clover crop is estimated at 13.078,000 tons.
During the first eight months of 1939, Canada exported 75,366,950 bushels of wheat and 3,005,951 barrels of wheat flour, as compared with 39,298,033 bushels and 2,220,586 barrels in the corresponding period in 1938.
