MASTERTON CLUB. SUCCESSFUL YEAR EXPERIENCED. The annual report of the Masterton Amateur Swimming and Life Saving Club for the 1938-39 season states: — Once again we can congratulate ourselves on having experienced a successful year, the only disappointing feature being that we have not made the expected progress towards obtaining more adequate baths. We feel very strongly on this subject, as visiting swimmers never fail to comment most disparagingly on the poor facilities offered for bathing and competitive swimming by the Masterton Borough baths. Although several deputations from the club have waited on the Borough Council, urging that new baths be constructed, we regret that as yet there are no signs of the success of our efforts. The club membership has been fully maintained, and the weekly aggregate competitions weed’ keenly contested. One carnival was held, very successful in every way except that the weather was most unkihd. A benefit night was held in aid of the Plunket Society and the Beautifying Society, and this was marked by a most disappointing attendance of the public. The club took a prominent part in the activities of Keep Fit Week, and held a special Club Night, at which we had the Australian professional diver, C. S. Dyer, who gave an excellent exhibition of diving. As usual, the club dance was a great success, and we wish to thank the enthusiastic and able ladies’ committee for their willing assistance. The Learn to Swim campaign was again in charge of the- club, and several country schools were visited, with very satisfactory results. We would like it more widely known that we have several excellent instructors who are always pleased to assist in teaching anyone to swim. The life saving side of the club was revived under the able tuition of qualified club members, and several classes were put through the training. The following, are the winners of trophies during the season: —H. M. Peacock Memorial Cup (junior girls’ championship), A. Stains; H. M. Peacock Memorial Cup (junior boys’ championship), G. Whyborn; Wairarapa intercollegiate girls’ championship, P. Davis; J. J. Barnes Cup (senior ladies’ championship),; Miss P. Andrews; breaststroke championship, G. F. Milne; H. E. Pither.-Cup (senior men’s championship), J. Barnes; senior diving championship, V. McKeague; Masterton in-ter-club cup, T. Webb (Palmerston, North); A. A. Wilson Cup (Wairarapa primary schools’ championship), E. Dennes (Greytown); A. W. Hollings Cup (aggregate points in junior boys’ dive), E. Hollings; cups for junior girls attending most evening meetings, A. Stains and N. Stains (equal). The club acknowledges with thanks donations of cups from Messrs A. W. Hollings and F. Stains, and donations from Mrs E. Maguire, Mr and Mrs D. Andrews, Messrs J. Robertson, M.P., J.
Bruce, H. P. Glen, E. W. Perry and J. J. Barnes. The thanks of the club are also tendered to all the officials who so ably assisted at the carnival; to the honorary auditor, Mr D. B. Curry; to. the coach, Mr J. Dooling; to the club’s delegate to the Wellington centre, Mr K. Spry; to the club’s delegate to the Royal Life Saving Society, Mr I. McHardy; to the custodian of the baths, Mr J. Kelly; to the Press; and to all members who helped make the season a success. The report which is to be presented to the annual meeting in the Y.M.C.A. on Thursday, November 2, is signed by H. P. Glen (president) and F. M. Morton (horn secretary).
