TURF NEWS AND NOTES

Lady Furst has been re-handicapped to 8.2 for the New Zealand Cup. The progeny of Siegfried have been successful over two miles and for that rea - son Lady Furst may be the favourite of many followers of the turf. Centrepoise has gone up to 7.11, but those who go on stamina will recall that no progeny of Hunting Song has yet successfully covered a distance over two miles. No fewer than 14 New Zealand Cup candidates were seen out at the Wellington spring meeting, and although those that attracted attention from the judge now occupy favour, something can be said against a complete discard of the defeated division. Lady Furst won the Wellington Handicap in good style, and apparently is able to carry on at the end. On the second day Lady Furst, meeting Centrepoise on 811 b and Yours Truly on 9£lb worse terms, suffered defeat by half a . length and a neck. In the field on the first day were Yours Truly (fourth), Lowenberg (fifth), Siegmund, Dictate, Wagner. Might, and Parquet. Of those behind Yours Truly the best performance was put up by Lowenberg, as he was one of the last out of the straight. Behind the placed lot on the second day were Mishna, Siegmund, Trebor, Wagner, Tooley Street, Might, and Parquet. On the form in the Wellington Handicap Lady Furst in the New Zealand Cup meets Centrepoise on practically the same terms again; Tooley Street meets Lady Furst on 41b and Centrepoise on s|lb better terms at Riccarton. Yours Truly (fourth on the first day and second in the Watkins Handicap) meets Lady Furst on 101 b and Centrepoise on BJlb worse terms in the New Zealand Cup. Equal ability to stay favours Yours Truly on the figures. Lowenberg meets Lady Furst on 21b and Cen - trepoise on ljlb better terms at Ric- ! carton. He appears to be a slow stayer, and he and Wagner may be said to have shaped fairly well under difflcul-

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Four-Year-Olds Have Good Record IN NEW ZEALAND’S CHIEF RACING EVENT (BY ••CARBINE.") In the New Zealand Cup four-year-olds have a record which will doubtless cause punters to give more than a fleeting glance to similar aged horses who will face the barrier at Riccarton'in the 1939 big race at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s carnival.' The Banker, who won in 1925 with 8.4; Menelaus, who carried 8.1 when he succeeded in 1917, are the only other horses of that age to carry over 8.0 successfully. If Lady Furst succeeds she will have put up a fresh weight carrying record for a mare, which is at present held by Fast Passage, who carried 8.0 to victory in 1932. The highest weight ever to be carried successfully by a four-year-old was that of Grand Rapids, who won in 1904, with 8.5.

3 ties. Arctic King ran in the Wainui e Handicap, and finished well outside a - place, and Mishna finished second. On • the final day Arctic King, Siegmund, e and Peerless made a sporting contri- - bution to the field for the Harcourt e Stakes. Mishna was also amongst the a also, started in the Pearce Handicap. 3 Sternchase Ineligible. Sternchase, who was entered for the a Spring Plate,'" to be run over a mile, on - the first day of the Now Zealand Cup 1 meeting, because of his win at Tren2 tham, will now be ineligible. r — 1 Waller’s Team. t Anita Foe, who provided one of the 1 biggest surprises seen at Trentham r when she won the Ruahine Handicap, , on Monday, claims an engagement in 1 the New Zealand Oaks. She is a threp- . year-old bay filly by Defoe from Pollyt anna. This was her first success, and > it brings Jim Waller into further pro- , minence as a trainer. Waller will be remembered by his association with I that grand little mare, Aurora Borea- . Jis, writes “The Escort.” For a number , of years he been attached to the Manawatu Hunt, and has devoted a good deal of his time to the preparation of horses for show, at which he has been most successful. Although he has nqt treated the racing side of the business seriously he has on occasions raced horses, and after winning at a number of shows with Treasure Hunt, Waller prepared him for a race at a Wairarapa meeting, where he was responsible for a huge dividend. This season Waller has gathered a small team together and has enjoyed a prosperous time, the star member, of course, being Sleeveless, who has won four races and has been once second in her five starts since coming under his care, while (Aurora's Star, a daughter of Aurora Borealis, won at the’Marton meeting; Just in Time. Had Silver Streak, who is now 10 years old, not shown up favourably at the Gore meeting it was his owner’s intention to retire the son of Paper Money. Starting first favourite on Saturday over a distance generally considered more to his liking than a mile and a-quarter, he was allowed to start at an outside price on Monday and dead-heated with Norseman in the principal race. A Coming Trotting Champion. Special Edition won the Redcastle Handicap at Oamaru very easily and looks the part of a coming champion. He was a little restless at the start, but his pace enabled him to get a position next the rails just in behind Guncase before a furlong had been covered, and he remained there until approaching the straight, where he drew away to win very easily. He should be worth following at Addington next month. Wings of Songs.Wings of Song, who won in impressive style at Trentham, is a three-year-old gelding by Hunting Song from Ad • ornment, by The Nut —Elegance, by Seaton Deleval —Antelope, by Apremont. He is engaged at Riccarton and will take some beating over six furlongs. i Should Provide Good Battle. Beaulivre and Beaupartir arc both " engaged in the King's Plate (one mile) ( and the Clifford Plate (one mile and i a-quarter); to be run at weight-for-age at the Auckland Cup meeting. ( Gay Parade. Gay Parade did not run up to expec- 1 tations at Wellington, but evidently did not dishearten the stable, as he is in the Railway Handicap at Auckland. J Eight in a Row. 1 Beaulivre has now won eight races I in succession, six this season for his 1 present owner, who gave 2,900gns for 1 him last July. His record now stands at 12 wins, four seconds, and one third i out of 17 starts, and though there may be some doubt regarding his stamina 1 there does not appear to be anything in sight to beat him in the New Zealand Derby next month. I < In Cup and Derby. c At one time it was the usual thing c for a good three-year-old to contest both the New Zealand Cup and Derby. In 1888 Manton won both of these I races. Euroelydon in 1895. Seahorse in 1899, and Nbctuiform in 1905 also won t this double. This year Kobi. by Bui andshar from Lucinetle, is the only \ three-year-old engaged in both races.

Sternchase in Training. . The Lord Quex colt Sternchase has arrived at Riccarton in charge of Mr G. G. Beatson and has started training. This good-looking young horse closely resembles one of the Hunting Song breed. This is brought about by his dam, Enchantment, being by Hunting Song from Smoke Concert. This made her a sister to Gallant Fox and Ringing Cheer. Sternchase is one of the few horses by Lord Quex left an entire and is certainly a most attractive individual.
