CARTERTON
THE WAR IN CHINA , VIEWS OF HONG KONG RESIDENT. (“Times-Age” Special.) There arrived in Carterton from Hong Kong this week the mother of Mrs W. Wong. She arrived on a visit to her daughter and son-in-law. She is hale and hearty and knows the Domin<ion well, having spent her childhood in New Zealand. Asked how the war was affecting Hong Kong the visitor said it had not been so far felt in that part of China. Things generally were not quite so buoyant as they might be. House rents were very high and the poorer section of the community found it very hard to get suitable housing at a reasonable rental. Questioned if the voyage out had been at all adventurous, she replied in the negative. The only unusual thing was that they travelled “black out” the whole journey. The trip had been a pleasant one throughout, but she was glad when she was allowed ashore in New Zealand. She is a good conversationalist and speaks exceptionally good English.
