CONCLUSION OF WAIRARAPA GATHERING

RAIN HOLDS OFF FOR PEOPLES' DAY. DECREASE IN GATE TAKINGS. Fortune favoured People’s Day of the Wairarapa Show yesterday when contrary to general expectations, except for a light shower or two in the morning, the rain held off and in the afternoon the sun made several brave attempts to break through the heavy clouds. The threatening weather, all the same affected the attendance to a certain extent and it was not surprising to find a drop in the gate takings yesterday of £34 12s, compared with People’s Day last year. The gate takings yesterday were £313, against £348 on the corresponding day last year, and the total for the gathering was £4lB 3s 6d, as compared with £466 last year. Mr R. Fortune, of Timaru, gave a splendid exhibition of sheep working with a team of five dogs imported from Scotland. The dogs ran in unison and worked (he sheep over a trial course, including yarding and driving. While four of the dogs were lying on the ground a fifth dog worked the sheep between them, each dog repeating this performance in turn. A large crowd witnessed the exhibition. Besides Mr W. H. Booth, who has been Press steward at the Wairarapa Show for many years and whose assistance is invaluable to the pressmen engaged in reporting the proceedings. Mr J. Fisher gave much appreciated help in the same direction. A party of about 150 boys from Petone schools visited the Show yesterday. Additional results are as follow: — CHAMPIONSHIPS Clydesdale: Staiiion, Donald McKenzie (Masterton); reserve, G. E. Allen, Junr. (East Taratahi). Mare, Mrs E. Selby (Napier); reserve, Donald McKenzie. LIVE STOCK JUDGING Southdown sheep: A. Southey (Masterton) 1, E. Ellis (Masterton) 2.
