POINTED OUT BV LORD HALIFAX VAIN ATTEMPT TO DIVIDE BRITAIN & FRANCE. NO RECOIL FROM PLEDGES TO POLAND. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright. (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 26.. In the House of Lords, Viscount Halifax described Herr von Ribbentrop’s speech as the clumsiest of attempts to divide England and France, whose relations had never been more complete or more intimate. If Herr von Ribbentrop were unsuccessful in understanding the British people, he was less successful in understanding the joint mind of Britain and France. Lord Halifax, replying to a suggestion that trade with Russia should be restored, said the Soviet’s action in the Baltic States had caused anxiety. The situation at present was not clear. Referring to Poland, the Foreign Secretary said the Government did not recoil from its pledges to her. It made .no difference to the Poles whether they were invaded from the east or the west. He added: “I think that, despite Russia’s professed economic solidarity with Germany, she now appears willing to trade impartially with all belligerents. The British Government has already taken advantage of this willingness and has reached an agreement for the exchange of timber for rubber and tin, and is now examining the possibility of further trade on a barter basis. Lord Halifax added that the Government was greatly pleased at the maintenance of good Russo-Turkish relations.
