The Governor-General, Lord Galway, left for the South Island last evening. He expects to return to Wellington on the morning of Friday, November 3.
Mr Roy Wills, of Dunedin, is spending a short holiday in Masterton and is staying at Kent House. Messrs R. Neilson (Palmerston North), G. Salt and Edmonds (Wellington) are visitors to Masterton. and are staying at the Empire Hotel. Mr Keith Macklow, of Hastings, who was injured in an accident at Mount Bruce on Tuesday afternoon last, and was subsequently admitted to the Masterton Hospital, is reported to be well on the way to recovery.
Guests at the Hotel Midland, Masterton, include: Messrs H. Hurley (Wellington), J. Sutton (Feilding), H. T. Costello (Hastings), J. T. Reeves (Wellington) and A. Bird (Palmerston North).
At the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors last night, the resignation of Mr E. W. Evans, 8.C0m., was received with regret. Mr Evans has joined the staff ot Horowhenua College, Levin.
The resignation of Mr T. A. Russell, plumbing instructor at Wairarapa College, was received with regret at last night’s meeting of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors. The secretary was instructed to write to Mr Russell conveying the Board’s thanks for his valuable services over many years.
Advice was received yesterday by the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, that Mr C. M. Bruce, C. 8., 0.8. E.. who recently gave valuable service to the New Zealand Naval Board on the special committee on naval pay and allowances, died at sea on September 22, while returning to England aboard the Port Hunter. The cause of Mr Bruce’s sudden death was heart trouble, and he was buried at sea. Mr J. Dickson, late manager of the Dunedin branch of the Goldberg Advertising Agency, has been appointed advertising manager of the "TimesAge” for the period of the war in place of Mr J. D. Baybutt, who leaves Masterton on November 7 for military duty. Mr Dickson has had a wide experience of advertising work, being formerly with the Charles Haines Advertising Agency in Wellington. He has been responsible for planning campaigns for both national and local advertisers and is recognised as an expert copy writer. Mr Dickson will commence duty on November 1.
