TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Beaulivre Has Ability Over a Mik NEXT MEETING WITH BEAUPARTIR SHOULD BE A CLASSIC (BY “CARBINE.”) The fight for premier honours in the Harcourt Stakes at Trentham settled the vexed question of whether Beaulivre could run on successfully beyond the mile. In such a manner did he stride along that the Derby should be within his grasp. He hit out at the business end of the race with such a determination that those who have long fancied him for the Derby will have had all fears removed as to his ability to successfully see the distance out. , Beaupartir. who filled second place, had only started once before, some months ago, and he could not be expected to show the same form as he did in his races against Defaulter last season. At the finish of the Stakes he was going exceptionally well and nearly headed his more seasoned rival. The next meeting between Beaulivre and Beaupartir will be looked forward to with considerable interest by followers of racing, and an even more thrilling encounter than in the Harcourt Stakes should be witnessed.

His success in the Harcourt Stakes marked Beaulivre’s eighth successive win, and he equalled the record of Gallio, who three years ago won the Avondale Guineas, the Great Northern Guineas, the Trentham Stakes and the Harcourt Stakes. Inaugurated in 1909, the race for the Harcourt Cup was originally known as the Champion Plate, and it was not until 1928 that the title was changed in tribute to the memory of Mr J. B. Harcourt, a former president of the Wellington Racing Club. In 1932, the giving of a cup to the winner was discontinued, and in 1933 the title was again changed to the Harcourt Stakes, at which it stands, today. '-■* Many good horses have been enrolled as winners of the race, and such names as Desert Gold, Gloaming, Amythas, Gold Light, Surveyor, Limerick and Defaulter come readily to mind, but like Catalogue’s Winter Cup record, the performance of Desert Gold, who won on three successive occasions, may stand for many years. Gloaming also won the event three times, but in his case there was a lapse of three years between his second and third win. C.J.C. Re-Handicaps.
