Large Attendance in Spite of Threatening Weather FURTHER CHAMPIONSHIP AND OTHER AWARDS The Carterton Showgrounds presented an. animated and gav appearance today-I’eople’s Day of the Wairarapa P and A. Show. In spite of the threatening weather, theie \\as a large attendance/of the public, who found plenty of ineips and entertainment among the many attractions of tl e>. ■ The horse competitions in the ring, the inspection of pi ize stock and the wealth of sideshows all attracted then T not( spectators. Considerable interest, centred in the grand parac of live stock, in which the best animals m the Show made round of the ring before the eyes of thousands. Maniv otM patrons inspected the industrial and trade exhibits Duiin the afternoon the Wairarapa College Pipe Band played acceptable musical selections. . Jud-in- of the horses and dogs, besides one or two classes of cattle" occupied the attention of judges today but <he great bulk of the adjudicating was completed yesterday. Ihe attendance during the day yesterday was, i 3 kinobetter than last year, the gate takings, winch_totalled £33, o £1 3s more than those recorded for the first day last year. La. t nio-ht the attendance at the evening session, although quite good, was not up to last year’s, the gate takings being £7O, or £l4 less than last year’s total. . The Showgrounds presented a colourful appealanee last nio-ht when the grounds were brightly lit and hundreds of coloured electric lights on the dozens of sideshows added brilliance to the scene. Excellent business was recorded at most of the sideshows and the occasion was a gala one tor voiino' and old. National dancing competitions were a feature of the evening session. The main street of Carterton and Belvedere Street, leading to the Showgrounds, were elaborately Imhted with coloured bulbs, which made an attractive approach to" the grounds, while the Pipe Band’s programme of Scottish airs set many feet atapping. _ A presentation was made in Ihe Showring yesterday ,o Mr Herbert Dryden, of West Taratahi, who was the oldest competitor taking part in the dog trials and has been competing at the Wairarapa Show for the past 20 years. A shepherd’s crook, donated to the society by Mr Peter Davidson, was presented to Mr Dryden by the president of the society, Mr If. R. Tilson.
