Mr A. C. Holland, M.Sc., A.1.C., a graduate of Canterbury University College and chemist to Woolston Tanneries, Limited, has been elected to the Proctor International Research Fellowship at Leeds University. Mr I. A. Hart, of Masterton, who recently enlisted, has been selected for the special military force with the rank of first lieutenant, and will report at camp on November 8.
Mr J. D. Baybutt, Advertising Manager of the “Wairarapa Times-Age,” who enlisted some time ago, has been attached to the field regiment N.Z.A. with the rank of first lieutenant-and will report at camp on November 8. The death occurred at' Palmerston North on Monday of Mr G. G. Jamieson, youngest son of Mr T. G. Jamieson, of Hopelands, at the age of 33 years. The funeral took place at Woodville yesterday.

The well-known tennis player Mrs Sarah Palfrey Fabyan has filed a suit for divorce, charging her husband with cruel and abusive treatment, a New York cablegram reports. She is also asking for permission to resume her maiden name.

The death occurred suddenly of Mr Hugh Somerset Hawkes Whitcombe, aged 49, manager of the Auckland branch of Whitcombe and Tombs Ltd. states a Press Association message from Auckland. Mr Whitcombe was a son of Mr George Hawkes Whit combe, one of the founders of the firm, which was established in Christchurch in 1880.

Irvine, New Plymouth; Ballantyne and Donnelly, Auckland; Mr and Miss P. Smith, Hawke’s Bay. The death occurred on Tuesday at Miramar of Mr Mark Henry Ayre, for many years a resident of Otaki. In his early days he was stationmaster under the Manawatu Railway Co, and later he was town clerk at Otaki. Mr Ayre was a well-known athlete in his younger days and was handicapper to various sports bodies in the Horowhe nua district. He leaves a daughter, Mrs Hayes, and two sons, Messrs George and. Joseph Ayre. Mrs Ayre and a son William, died some years ago.
