DISPUTE AT LYTTELTON
9 ; WATERSIDERS & RAILWAYS DEPARTMENT. REFUSAL TO WORK CARGO ON RANGITIRA. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, October 24, Because of a dispute between the Railway Department and waterside workers employed by the department regarding the working of the steamer express Rangatira at Lyttelton today, no cargo was loaded or unloaded from the ship. The vessel was worked on the railway side by permanent railway men from 7 a.m. till 8 a.m. today, which is claimed to be the usual practice after a holiday. Casual watersiders were engaged to work from 8 a.m., but it is alleged that they declined to work on the grounds that they should have been engaged on Saturday for a 7 a.m. start on Tuesday. The ship’s watersiders were also engaged today in the morning, but, as cargo could not be handled without the railway' watersiders, the former were discharged at midday. The dispute was then referred to headquarters at Wellington. Because of the holiday on Monday, the Rangatira had very little cargo for discharge; but had a fairly large quantity to load for Wellington. This cargo remained in trucks on the wharf.
