SPLENDID DISPLAY OF STOCK AT CARTERTON

Keen Competition in Cattle Classes

MANY ATTRACTIONS FOR THE PUBLIC CHAMPIONSHIP AND OTHER AWARDS A feature of the Wairarapa Centennial- Show, which opened at the Carterton Showgrounds today, is the exceptionally fine display of stock, all classes of which are represented by splendid animals from the leading breeders of the district and elsewhere. The entries of cattle are the largest for a considerable number of years, while those in the other stock classes are well up to the average. This year the total entries number 2920, as compared with 3052 last year. This is regarded as most satisfactory under the circumstances now ruling. The first day is a busy one for judges, who were engaged: today in adjudicating in the various stock classes. In some sections, this proved to be a big task. Besides a great number and variety of sideshows offering, every conceivable means of amusement for young and old, there are many motor and other trade exhibits, displays of agricultural implements, tractors and machinery of special . interest to the farming community. Although the weather was somewhat threatening in the morning, it was quite mild. The attendance was well up to the average for an off day. ' The night show this evening, provided the weather is favourable, promises to attract a large attendance of the public. A treasure hunt for the children, national dancing competitions and amusements-to suit all tastes at the many sideshows will pass the time all too quickly. The Wairarapa Pipe Band will play selections during the evening. Tomorrow People’s Day will be observed, when a full programme of ring events will be the centre of interest, not to mention the spectacular parade of live stock which will take place at 2.30 p.m. The Wairarapa College Pipe Band will contribute a musical programme in the afternoon.

Outside exhibitors are not particularly noticeable in the cattle section, the great bulk of the entries being from Wairarapa breeders. Two new exhibitors in the Herefords are Hutchison Bros, and F. E. Humphrey, of Gisborne, and E. W. Barrett, Halcombe, while in the Aberdeen Angus classes are two Hawke’s Bay competitors, Donald Grant, Dannevirke and Tautane Stud Ltd.,' Tautane. In Ayrshires, W. Moore and Son, Masterton, are the only competitors. District breeders are well represented in Milking Shorthorn, Friesian and Jersey classes. The entries in both Friesians and Jerseys are particularly large and competition here is 'of the keenest. Grade dairy cattle and the championship dairy classes are well filled. In the sheep classes outside competitors include Voss Bros., LongbuSh, in Lincolns and Romney Marsh, while a new exhibitor in Southdowns (open) is E. W. Barnett, Halcombe. Another non-Wairarapa competitor in Southdowns is J. Knight, Feilding. W. A. Tod (Otane) is an exhibitor in natural condition Romney Marsh. Large entries have been received in the fat lamb classes. Some fine pigs have been entered in the Berkshire and Tamworth classes and good competition is evident in baconers and porkers. The president, Mr R. R. Tilson, ttie secretary, Mr L. H. Smart, and other officials of the society proved an able team in attending to the many detail arrangements associated with the running of the show. Once more, Mr W. H. Booth gave every possible assistance to the Press representatives in their, task of reporting the proceedings. CHAMPIONSHIPS Championship awards are as follow: Hereford: Bull, E. W. Barrett (Halcombe); reserve, Hutchinson Bros (Gisborne). Ayrshire: Cow, W. Moore and Son (Masterton); reserve, W. Moore and Son. Lincolns: Ram, L. R. Wilton (Masterton); reserve, L. R. Wilton.
