TURF NEWS AND NOTES
CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Great Importance of Racing VAST INTERESTS INVOLVED IN SPORT OF KINGS A VALUABLE AND SUCCESSFUL INDUSTRY (BY “CARBINE.”) Not until a national emergency causes a cessation of racing do the average regular racegoers begin to reflect upon the vast interests involved in the business of the “Sport of Kings.” They understand that racing is a valuable and successful industry as well as a sport, but only when they read of a stallion being sold for 60,000 guineas do they begin to realise the big sums invested in racing, training and breeding. It is doubtful, however (says 'an English writer), if the general public realises that the collective value of bloodstock in the United Kingdom is over £5,000,000, that there are more than 8300 horses in training, and that the foundation of the breeding industry consists of some 2000 brood mares and about 300 registered thoroughbred stallions, whose service fees range from 400 guineas to 5 guineas.
More than £BOO,OOO is distributed annually in stakes for winning and placed horses under Jockey Club rules alone. There are 103 racecourses of which 47 are used for flat racing, and between 350 and 400 training establishments. The most important training centre is Newmarket, where there are normally 1200 horses in regular work on the various parts of the Heath. The next most important training quarter is Epsom, with 430, then Lambourn, with 390, Wangtage and district, with 250, Middleham, with 200, and Malton, with 160. The value of racehorses varies from £60,000 for a colt like Blue Peter to a fiver for a modest selling hurdler. The annual sales of bloodstock amount to over half a million pounds, the. most important being the Doncaster yearling sales in September, which result in nearly 400 lots changing hands for £250,000, and the Newmarket December sales, where about 800 lots are sold for over £200,000. This year’s Doncaster sales have been postponed, and, if the war continues, prices will slump considerably at the Newmarket December sales should they take place. VARIOUS JOTTINGS Eighth in Succession. .Beaulivre’s win in the Harcourt Stakes at Trentham on Monday marked his eighth success in succession, and his sixth as a three-year-old since being purchased by his present owners at 2900 guineas. This colt’s record now stands at 12 wins, four seconds, and one third out of 17 starts. He has won £1635 in stakes for his present owner. His dam, Pass Book, is by Paper Money, whose mares are breeding well. New Australian Trotting Record. I An Australian record for a flying mile by an unhoppled trotter was made at the Melbourne Show, when Lord Daley registered 2min 11 sec. The previous Commonwealth record was 2 min 15sec made at Perth in 1923 by Princess Wilkes. The Dominion record is 2min 3 3-ssec, by Worthy Queen.
Her First Colt Foal. Set Sail, who has now been at the stud for 10 years, has this season produced a colt foal to Man’s Pal. This is the first time she has produced a colt.
