SCOTTISH PIPE BAND

ANNUAL MEETING. ("Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Wairarapa Scottish Pipe Band was held last week. ~<? The treasurer reported a small credit balance in the band’s working account. A review of the year’s activities showed that the band had appeared at public and semi-public occasions and it was decided to continue these activities as far as circumstances permit in the future. The election of officers resulted: Patron, .Mr Thos S. Arcus; president, Mr N. E. Hannah; hon secretary and treaasurer, Mr S. J. Fisher; pipe major, Mr J, B, Johns; pipe sergeant, Mr R. Hall; pipe corporal, Mr E. McFarlane. It was decided not to take an active part in the Dominion championship contest in January, but to support an effort, to raise funds for the same by the sale of art union tickets, etc. The band will appear in support of the R.S.A. on Sunday .November 12, when a memorial tablet to the memory of the late Rev Fielden Taylor will be unveiled. BOWLING CARTERTON CLUB. Saturday’s weather conditions were not very favourable for bowling activities. Nevertheless some really good games were played on the local green. Afternoon tea which was provided by Mrs N. Boyne and Miss Robertson was appreciated by those present. Carterton will be represented at the official opening of the Featherston green on Saturday next. CRICKET CARTERTON NOT FIELDING A TEAM. Cricket in the Wairarapa was commenced on Saturday and to the astonishment of supporters. Carterton, last year’s junior champions, failed to field a team. The reasons for this lapse no one seems to know. It it stated that Carterton will not be fielding a team this year. One would have thought that a champion eleven of the previous season would be eager to endeavour to repeat its performance this year. It is not too late yet to get going and cricket supporters believe there is enough enthusiasm to do so. GOLF CARTERTON MEN’S CLUB. Members of the Carterton Golf Club played a stableford competition on the Taratahi links on Saturday and had a most enjoyable afternoon’s play. The best cards handed in were B. Booth 31, 3, 34; J. V. Gustofson 21, 12, 33; D. Smith 24. 8, 32. A further competition is being played today. WOMEN’S DIVISION BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Women s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Presbyterian Hall last weekend and was presided ever by Mrs E. W. Allen, president. ' There was a fair attendance of members: The balance sheet submitted by the secretary, Miss M. E. Thompson, in connection with the recent Baby Carnival was considered by members to be most satisfactory. Votes of thanks were accorded to all stall-holders and those who had so energetically assisted in the successful running of the recent carnival and to the secretary for the able manner in which she had carried out her duties. During the meeting, Mrs E. W. Allen thanked the mothers of the babies who had competed in the carnival and said that without their help the function would not have been the success it was. The munificent sum raised would go a long way towards the erection ot the much needed Ladies' Rest Room for Carterton. Mrs Allen asked the mothers to accept an enlarged framed photograph of their babies as a slight recognition of their efforts in the carni'■'val. (Applause). Each mother gracefully returned thanks. Mrs Allen then asked Mrs H. Peters to accept from the Women’s Division a copy of a Centennial, book, “Brave Day,” that has been published for the Union, Mrs Peters having written an article that had been accepted for publication and which appears in the book.
