AIR RAIDS ON BRITAIN GERMAN PLANE SHOT DOWN. ENEMY AIRMEN PICKED UP IN NORTH SEA. The following Daventry reports have been rebroadcast by the New Zealand National stations:— Early yesterday afternoon two German planes were reported on the south-eastern coast of Scotland. Fighters were sent up, and one of the German planes was shot down. Yesterday afternoon air raid warning were given on parts of the northeast coast. Fighters were up to intercept the enemy machines, which did not pass the coast, and no bombs were dropped. Five German airmen who took part in an unsuccessful attack on a convoy have been picked up in the North Sea. V/ESTERN FRONT QUIET. On the Western front the situation during the night was reported quiet on the whole. The French line is now said to be running for almost its whole length in French teritory. The heavy rain which has fallen has shown the wisdom of the withdrawal, as the positions formerly held would now have to be defended under very difficult conditions. CONFERENCE IN BERLIN. From Berlin no fresh news has come of the conference to which Herr Hitler has summoned all Nazi leaders. It is understood that he desires to learn what the German public really thinks and for the first time is not accepting information given him by the Chief of Police. Last night a German wireless report said that Herr Hitler had agreed to return to Slovakia certain areas occupied by the former Polish state. HITLER’S DECISION. Herr Hitler is continuing his conferences with the General Staff, Ad- | miralty and Ambassadors to Turkey, Russia and Italy., It is stated that Herr Hitler has given up all hope of peace and has decided to prosecute the war to Germany’s best advantage. FABLES BY GOEBBELS. Dr Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda, in a broadcast speech to the German nation, repeated extravagant claims regarding the sinking of British warships and rurther abused Mr Churchill. Dr Goebbels alleged that the Athenia was sunk by three British destroyers. A Soviet economic mission is to leave for Germany in the near future. The Polish Government set up in Paris has issued,.a statement that the plebiscite held in the Russian occupied areas of Poland was held contrary to all international law. It was conducted to confirm Russia’s claim to occupy the area. A total of 215,231 men of the 20-22 age group registered in Britain yesterday. The Red Army has completed the occupation of. Estonian islands ceded to Russia under the recent agreement. Signor Gayda, commenting on the Anglo-French Turkish Pact, said nothing could be done in the Balkans with-1 out Italy and Italians would observb future developments with their usual calm. *
