AFFRAY IN SHANGHAI
CHINESE & SETTLEMENT POLICE COMPLEX SITUATION. TROOPS HELP TO BUILD BARRICADES. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright ' LONDON. October 22. Three Chinese, one of whom was a policeman, were killed and an undetermined number wounded in a clash on the border of the International Settlement at Shanghai between Settlement police units in an armoured car. supported by Italian marines, and Chinese motor-cyclists, who had loosed a hail of rifle and machine-gun fire and thrown hand grenades at the Japanese. The police, cordoning the area, ended the fight. It is alleged that the motor-cyclists were members of Wang Ching-wei’s private protection corps, whom Settlement police attempted to halt. Foreigners in Shanghai regard the clash as a development in the Japanese anti-British drive, involving an attempt to control roads bordering on the International Settlement.
The Shanghai correspondent of the American United Press states that Settlement police in full war kits and with submachine-guns and armoured cars are guarding bordering roads following the outburst of terrorism yesterday. British troops aided the police to build barricades and move ammunition in fast trucks.
