LAWN TENNIS
MEMORIAL CLUB OPENS , SEASON. YANKEE TOURNAMENT PLAYED. The official opening of the Memorial Lawn Tennis Club took place on Saturday afternoon in cold and threatening weather. Despite overnight rain the courts were in splendid playing order. . The courts were declared open for play by the club captain. Mr J. A. Kennedy, who apologised for the absence of the president. Mr J. Jameson. Mr Kennedy extended a hearty welcome to the visitors and new members, and urged sponsors of new members to introduce them to the committee and club members, and see that they enjoyed themselves. Mr Kennedy then called on Miss P. Kilmister to hit the first ball over the net. and declared the season officially opened. A Yankee tournament was capably run by Mr R. Costello and produced tennis of a high standard for so early in the season. Owing to the an uneven number ol men and women playing in the tournament, the final resulted in Messrs M. Syron and B. Carrig defeating Miss M. V. Greenlees and Mr J. Martin, 6/3.
Afternoon tea was served by a ladies’ committee.
