The white heron that lives in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens during the winter leaves when the kowhai comes into bloom, according to Mr J. A. McPherson, director of the gardens. It lias now been gone for 10 days. The heron comes in early winter; in the past it has left soon after arrival to return about a week later with a mate. This year it did not go away, but lived alone for the winter season.
