CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Favourites Score at Trentham BEAULIVRE’S FIFTH CLASSIC EVENT IN SUCCESSION CHERRY BAY UPSETS IN KARITANE HANDICAP

(BY

“CARBINE.”)

There was one upset at the Wellington races on Saturday when Cherry Bay got up just in time to record a win in the Karitane Handicap, beating Black Robe by half a head. Generally, however, it was a day for favourites, four winning and two filling second place. In a brilliant finish the consistent Beaulivre registered his fifth successive win in classic events when he added the Trentham Stakes to his record. Centrepoise made amends for his first day failure by winning the Watkins Handicap from Yours Truly.

AUSTRALIAN RACING RIVETTE WINS CAULFIELD CUP. BRILLIANT FORM SHOWN. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. MELBOURNE, October 22. Aided by a weight advantage, Rivette brilliantly won the Caulfield Cup on Saturday. She carried 31b overweight, but has' shown brilliant form since the declaration of weights, and ( the handicapper would probably have awarded her 8.7 if he had the option of ; altering the imposts. I Rivette made a modest beginning 1 and proved difficult to train. She 1 has been sparsely raced. Her dam, Riv, < was a champion performer on pony courses, and Rivette herself is little J more than a pony. The rider, E. Pres- , ton, was lucky to get the mount, as J. ‘ Purtell was engaged, but sustained a broken leg a few weeks back. Maikai had every chance but was outstayed by I the winner. Respirator was possibly unlucky, a slow beginning assisting to J beat him. Geebung had a poor run, and :

: Elanage was never a possibility. David ; ’ Spear l surprised by his forward show- ; i ing, but Wilson went only a fair race. ■, The weather was fine and the at- ( tendance 67,500, a record. ] Gold Salute returned £245 of his ' purchase money when he outclassed his rivals in the first division of the 1 ; Burwood Handicap. It was a good ■ . Derby trial. Muscari weakened, but ■ Riviera finished well. Aranui assisted .! : to make the pace but tired, and Manu- ‘ : ere was never dangerous. There is a j possibility of Gold Salute going to Am> ' erica next season if sufficient inducement is offered and the colt goes along all right. The defeat of Border Lass was never , likely in the second division of the Burwood Handicap, the fast finishing , Mac Rob being second and Snow White a good third. Philwirth went a poor J race.
