TREATY OF MUTUAL ASSISTANCE SIGNED
Following on Breakdown of Negotiations in Moscow UNDERTAKINGS OF WIDE SCOPE COMBINED STAND AGAINST AGGRESSION A treaty of mutual assistance between Great Britain, France and Turkey was signed in Ankara last night, a Daventry broadcast states. The treaty provides for assistance to Turkey by Great Britain and France if Turkey is attacked by any European Power, ox’ in the event of an act of aggression by a European Power in any Mediterranean area in which Turkey is involved. Turkey promises to assist Britain and France if they are involved in any Mediterranean area as a result of an act of aggression by any European Power, or as the result of Great Britain and France having to implement their guarantees to Greece and Rumania. Immediate consultation between the three countries is provided for in the event of aggression. The obligations which Turkey has undertaken cannot compel her to go to war with Soviet Russia. The treaty is to remain in force for a minimum period of 15 years.
