RUNNER BEANS

SHOULD BE IN NOW. The trenches should be prepared for the runner beans without delay. Dig a trench 12in deep and about the same width. Break up the bottom with a fork, then put in a thick layer of manure or decayed garden refuse. Scatter a little soil over the manure, but leave tho trench open until just before planting time. Fill in with good top spit soil, then make it firm. Sow the seeds in a double row at 12in apart. Stake the plants as soon as the runners show. In many Masterton gardens growers have runner beans well ahead—several inches above the ground.
