ORDERED BY HITLER
EFFORT TO DRIVE FRENCH BACK INTERFERENCE WITH HIGH COMMAND. AN INDICATED IMPASSE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, October 18. Reuter’s Paris correspondent says it appears that Herr Hitler intervened in the plans of the German High Command in ordering the attempt to drive the French across the frontier. The German claim that the French have retired behind their own frontier clearly shows that the wish was father of the thought and is believed to have been designed to show that France does not want to fight Germany, thus paving the way to Herr Hitler's second peace offensive. However, the possibility that the present German aggressiveness is only preparatory to larger operations is not ruled out. Colonel Requete, the military critic of the Belgian newspaper, “Independence Eelge,” states the opinion that German strategy has reached an im-
passe, whereas France's tactics could, not be more promising. Germany needs a rapid pace, and for this reason the French and British strategy should be to eschew rash adventures and aim at strengthening their lines and tightening the blockade’s screw.
