RAID ON EMDEN

REPORTED FROM HOLLAND GERMANS ADMIT ATTACK. SAY BRITISH PLANES WERE DRIVEN OFF. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, October 18. Reports from Holland state that the German naval base at Emden was raided yesterday. Estimates by eyewitnesses of the number of machines engaged vary between four and 40. Mist prevented the Dutch watchers from seeing clearly, but smoke from the German batteries could be seen rising into the air and many explosions were heard, rattling windows in the Dutch villages.

Another report says the raids lasted from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. It is believed Wilhelmshaven was also raided. German officials at Emden admit that British aircraft attempted to penetrate the German air defences, but say they were driven off.
