SINKING OF THE BRETAGNE SURVIVOR’S NARRATIVE. 1 ATTACK WITHOUT WARNING. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 9.20 a.m.) New York. October 18. A Paris correspondent of the Associated Press of American states that author Jose Germain, who is a survivor from the Bretagne, which was sunk by a submarine, gave the first eye witness account of the sinking. Germain, who was taken aboard a destroyer five hours after the vessel sank, said: “The Bretagne’s sirens gave the alarm, whereupon the captain ordered full steam ahead. He steered a zig-zag course, trying to escape, but the submarine followed like a shark, getting ahead and barring the way. It attacked us without warning, whereupon the passengers and crew took to the boats. STEAMER SUNK RESCUE OF 300 SURVIVORS. WASHINGTON. October 18. The Maritime Commission has been notified that the American freighter Independence Hall has rescued 300 survivors of a sunken steamer.
