Mr Douglas Robert Miller, son of Mr and Mrs J. G. Miller, The Fishponds. Pownall Street, Masterton, has been successful in passing his Leading Air Craft examination.

Guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton, include Messrs A. W. Foote, W. Sorenson, G. C. Thornton. H. A. Charlton, A. A. Brown (Wellington) and Bushby (Hastings). The Rev S. E. Woods will continue as chaplain at Canterbury University College for a fourth year, an extension of his appointment having been approved by the standing committee of the Diocese of Christchurch. Dr and Mrs Archer Hosking, Church Street, Masterton, announce the engagement of their only son. Owen, “Te Puna,” to Noel, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. H. Pearson, Hastings. Nominations for election on the council of the New Zealand Golf Association closed on Monday. Sitting members of the council do not require nomination, and the only nomination received was that of Mr D. R. Richmond, captain of the Miramar Golf Club. The present members and Mr Richmond will be declared elected at the annual general meeting on November 16.

Corbett (Wellington), R. Govan (Christchurch), S. Kerrard (Auckland), J. Brown (Wellington), G. O. Wild (Wellington), R. H. Hynes (Wellington). J. Clarke (Palmerston North) and S. Wiles (Auckland). The death has occurred of Mr James Samuel Dickson. M.P. for Parnell from 1911 to 1928, states a Press Association message from Auckland. Mr Dickson increased his majority at every election till he was defeated by Mr H. R. Jenkins. The late Mr Dickson was a stalwart supporter of the late Rt Hon W. F. Massey, and it was in the interest of the Reform Party that he entered Parliament in 1911. At that election he defeated the late Sir John Findlay. When the late Hon R. F. Bollard was elevated to Mr Massey’s Ministry in 1923 Mr Dickson became Chief Whip of the Reform Party, which position he retained till that party went out of office in 1928. Possessed of great resource and tact, Mr Dickson served both Mr Massey and Mr Coates well in his role of Chief Whip, and in the years between 1923 and 1925.

Wynne who leaves today for Trantham Camp In presenting Mr Wynne with a verj fine folding camera, the Town Clerk Mr G. T. O'Hara Smith (himself a veteran of the 1914/1918 war) referred tc Mr Wynne's very fine staff record ovei a period of nearly two year and wishec him on behalf of all contributors th< very best of luck in camp training life as well as a safe return to New Zea land at the end of the war. At the Town Clerk's call, three cheers wer< given for Mr Wynne and his healtl was toasted. In responding Mr Wynne promised to send back a few snaps o the Maginot Line when he reached tha locality if not at. least one of the near by places -the British Tommies were popularising by a song of their own. ii which the words were interwoven ‘■Hanging out the Washing on the Ok Siegfried Line!" Mr Wynne thanked tin Town Clerk and his office staff friend: for their kindly words and useful gift.
