INDIA’S CATTLE
) PRODUCTION OF MILK PLAN FOR IMPROVEMENT. ORGANISATION SET UP. s s A permanent organisation has been t established in India for an annual Alli, India Cattle Show, the furtherance of i cattle breeding and the improvement generally of India’s livestock. India's f output of milk —6,400.000,000 gallons a 1 year —is exceeded only by that of the United States, with over 10,500,000,000 gallons. , India produces over four times the 3 output of Great Britain, over five : times that of Denmark, over six times i that of Australia, and over seven times ■ that of New Zealand, and the value 5 of her output is believed to be about ’ 300 crores of rupees (£225,000.000) a year. . But, whereas in the United States L the daily production of milk pel’ head j is 350 z, the Indian figure is relatively . trifling. This is a measure of the lee- ■ way that has to be made up in a : country which has the largest cattle ■ population in the world —nearly a third of the world total. Pedigree and : approved bulls number only one per cent of what is actually required. Fodder crops for animals are but 4 . per cent of the cultivated area, com- : pared with 25 per cent in England and . Wales, and as much as 16 per cent in : Egypt, while for the protection of ; stock from disease there is only one ; veterinary assistant for every 85,000 cattle, whereas one assistant for every ’ 25,000 is considered- necessary.
