ABOUT HORSES

PRINCESS MINERVA'S BREEDING. Princess Minerva camo under notice by a fast finishing effort in the hack sprint at Washdyke recently. She can claim some stout breeding being by Nightmarch from Red Queen, dam of Master Clarence and Studley Royal. Rod Queen was by All Red from Lady Victoria (dam of Lady Middleham), by Pilgrim's Progress from Lady Lilian byPhaeton from Lady Zetland. Princess Minerva was bred by Mr E. Gates, and is being raced by Mr W. Plummer, of Christchurch, for whom she is trained by Mrs J. Campbell. Astral Flash has been retired from racing and will be mated with Salmagundi this season. The Colonel Cygnus mare was only" lightly raced, but she performed well. Last season she wor.» two races and was four times placed. She is out of the Paper Money mare, Flicker. Spearmaid, the dam of Nigger Boy and Spanish Lad, is to be mated with Salmagundi. Francolin, the dam of Nightwings, Dark Flight, and Gold Flight, has produced a filly by Winning Hit and will be mated with Salmagundi. Fireguard is still causing his ownertrainer a deal of anxiety, and is not making the recovery expected from the trouble that laid him aside last winter. Beaulivre continues to prove a cheap horse at 2900 guineas. He has won four times this season, and it seems only a question of ordinary luck for the colt to continue in a winning groove.
