' MEETING OF MASTERTON e COUNCIL I L* s WANTON DESTRUCTION OF TREES t PETITION FROM MASTERTON t BUTCHERS. The monthly meeting of the Mas- . terton Borough Council was held last i night. Those present were the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, and Councillors Trevor ; Beetham, J. Ninnes, A. T. Jackson, H. . E. Gardner. R. Russell, G. W. Morice, . W. Kemp, W. H. Judd, A. D. Low, W. ;. White and G. D. Wilson. The Wairarapa Cricket Association wrote asking for the use of the Park , Oval for the coming cricket season on s the usual terms and conditions. The : application was granted. :. Mr A. W. Don, Principal of the Hadt low School, requested permission to t hold the school sports on South Park on the morning of October 20. The request was granted. The Park Custodian, Mr Sturgeon, reported that of the 28 pink chestnut trees planted by the swing bridge seven had been wantonly broken off and thereby destroyed. Cars had been driven over this area frequently at night, gaining entrance by the service cartway from Dixon Street. The engineer was instructed to have a gate erected to stop cars entering the - Park. It was decided to write to the Municipal Band and the Wairarapa - College Band conveying to them f the council’s appreciation in the manner in which they had turned out to farewell men going into camp and in responding to outdoor functions held during Recreation Week. A petition was received from the Masterton Butchers recommending that the council consider the question of contract killing instead of the present system. It was resolved that the Towm Clerk obtain particulars from abattoirs at which the contract killing system ! had been adopted for the information of the Gas and Abattoir Committee, when the petition will be further considered. Mr J. W. Norrie, Wellington City Librarian, advised that he was preparing a list of books suitable for the Children’s Library. It was resolved that Mr Norrie be thanked for his assistance and the interest he had taken. The Librarian was instructed to compile and submit to the next meeting of the Library Committee a list of all the books that are of no interest to readers so that steps may be taken to dispose of same. The Royal Sanitary Institute wrote , inviting the council to appoint a councillor as a representative on the Institute. Councillor Judd was appointed. The Under-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs advised chat a ' meeting of the Town Planning Board ( would be held in November, and en- l quired if the council's town planning ' scheme would be ready for submission J to the Board within six months for ’ provisional approval. The Town Clerk was instructed to reply to the effect that the council anticipates that its Town Planning Scheme would be ‘ ready for submission to the Board within the period mentioned. ’ Mrs Brenkley offered her services as ‘ Custodian C and A baths for the ensuing season. It was decided to reengage Mrs Brenkley for the position. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, and Councillors G. D. Wilson. A. D. Low and • W. Kemp were appointed a committee to confer with the Masterton County Council in connection with emergency ( precautions. __________ T
