Mr Hallet Abend, the “New York Times" Shanghai correspondent, submitted a series of questions to high Japanese Army circles, to which he has received the following replies:— “What is the future policy of the Japanese Army towards the numerous American and other Third Power missionaries in the interior of China?” —“New orders have recently been issued to commanders especially to safeguard such missionaries and a bureau has been established to investigate losses and arrange possible compensation." "What would the Japanese reaction be if an additional ten thousand American Marines wore ordered to Shanghai?” —“We cannot see any reason to object to the reinforcement of the Marines should the United States deem it necessary to the maintenance of peace and order after the withdrawal of British and French forces.” This reply makes it possible -mat American Marines will take over the defence sectors in the International Settlement at present held by British and French forces.
