ATTACKS ON SCAPA FLOW AND EAST COAST
Some Damage Done to iron Duke AT LEAST FOUR ENEMY BOMBERS DESTROYED DEFENCE MEASURES WORK SMOOTHLY (By Telegraph.-—Press Association.—Copyright.) A Daventry broadcast states that German aeroplanes have made two more raids on Scotland and also attempted a recon naissance of the East Coast of England. At least four German planes were brought down. The first raid was on the naval base at Scapa Flow, in which four German planes took part, one being shot down in flames and another badly damaged. Two bombs were dropped very near to H.M.S. Iron Duke. The ship received some damage, but there were no casualties. The Iron Duke has been used as a training ship. German planes also attacked a Royal mail ship. Although bombs fell round the ship, she was not hit. A second air attack occurred at the Orkneys, between 12.30 and 2.30 p.m. yesterday. Two formations took part, one of six planes and one of four. The raiders did no damage and there were no casualties. One German plane was destroyed. German aircraft also attempted a reconnaissance flight over the East Coast, air raid warnings being given in many East Coast towns. No bombs were dropped. Two enemy planes pursued by fighters fell into the sea, the crew of one plane being rescued. Everybody took the raids calmly and the precautionary measures worked smoothly. ’
