MANAWATU MEETING CHAMPIONSHIP TO H. BUCHANAN L. WELCH RUNNER-UP. ASHHURST. October 16. In fine but cloudy weather the Manawatu Rifle Association championship meeting was held on the Ashhurst range on Saturday, when 52 competitors from Petone, Wairarapa. Wanganui and all local district clubs took part. Seven teams competed for the Greer Teams Shield and three finished with but two points separating them. Cheltenham won by one point from Rangitikei. For the Manawatu championship three competitors tied—L. Welch (Kaiparoro) 35-35-32-102. H. Buchanan (Cheltenham) 34-35-33-102. and K. McDowall (Petone) 35-34-33-102, and the keenest interest prevailed in the shootoff at 600 yards, where H. Buchanan registered 24 for his five shots. L. Welch 23. and K. McDowall 22. Buchanan became the 1939 champion'in one of the closest contests held by .the Manawatu association. In the B grade championship, J. Hammond (Rangitikei) was the winner. and J.
