GERMANY STILL SEEKING . PEACE CONFERENCES IN BERLIN. LIE FACTORY ALSO KEPT BUSY. The following Daventry reports have been rebroadcast by the New Zealand national stations: — (The German Government is still seeking new means to secure peace. Hitler continues to hold conferences with the Government, party leaders and the Army. A special courier was despatched to Stalin during the weekend. It is reported that Stalin’s answer will have an important bearing on Germany’s plans. In the meantime, Nazi leaders are trying to keep up the spirits of the people by continuing reports of fictitious successes, claiming that the Ark Royal has been sunk, that the Repulse was torpedoed at the same time as the Royal Oak, that the Hood had been sunk and that two other large battleships had been sunk. These claims are entirely without foundation. Every loss suffered by the British Navy so far has been officially announced by the Admiralty. REPORTED NAVAL ACTION. A naval battle in the North Sea on Saturday afternoon is reported by Norwegian fishermen. Three cruisers and several planes, believed to be British, attacked a solitary warship. The battle lasted for two hours-. Whether the solitary warship was sunk or not is not known. Some fishermen believe the ship was sunk, but others do not confirm this, stating that the ship was badly damaged and was settling down in the water. The warship was apparently attempting to escape into Norwegian territorial waters and the attacking warships then turned to the west. Many bombing planes are ready m California to be flown over to New Jersey en route to England upon the ■repeal of the arms embargo clauses of the Neutrality Act. During the second week of Octobei the French Navy held up 25.000 tons of contraband goods destined for Geimany.
