NIGHT ACTIVITY
LIGHTS SEEN ON ROADS FAR BACK great roar of engines. LADEN LORRIES OR TANKS. (Received This Day, 11.0 a.m.) PARIS. October 16. Motor headlamps could be observed on the roads to the front as far back as 10 miles, indicating active troop movements. The frequent flashing of torches along the German front lines suggested that pew troops were being conducted •to positions. The roar of engines came either from troop-laden lorries, or massed tanks, or both. The French are perfectly forewarned, and have taken all measures to meet attack. GERMAN CLAIM TWO ALLIED PLANES SHOT DOWN. (Received This Day, 10.50 a.m.) BERLIN, October 16. The High Command announced the shooting down of a British bombing plane south-east of Gross Gerau, be-
tween Darmstadt and Frankfort, one occupant of the machine being killed, and three taken prisoner. The shooting down of a French scouting plane at Germersheim, near’ Landau, with one airman killed, and two taken prisoner, is also reported.
