PRICE OF SUGAR

FURTHER INCREASE DECIDED UPON. LOCAL POSITION SOMEWHAT OBSCURE. Although no official advice has yet been received, it is reported that the price of sugar is being increased f.o.b. Auckland by £3 16s 6d per ton, which will make the Auckland price £29 Us 6d. The increase represents roughly a rise of about -id per lb. Masterton grocers are in some doubt as to what is the actual position. The price of sugar is fixed by the Government, and one report states that grocers are expected to carry the increase. It is pointed out, however, that Id per lb is rather much to be placed on their shoulders. Although there appears to be little doubt that an increase has been decided upon, official confirmation is awaited before further consideration will be given to the effect, of the increase on local prices.
