MASTERTON RACES
SECOND DAY CHIEF EVENT TO YOURS TRULY. DEAD HEAT IN CHAMPION PLATE. The Masterton Racing Club’s spring meeting concluded on Saturday at the Opaki racecourse in fine but cold weather. The majority of the fields were small but the class of horse engaged was good and some excellent racing with exceedingly close finishes was witnessed by a fair attendance of the public. The majority of the dividends were small and the totalisator handled £8225 10s during the day, compared with £8242 on the second day last year. The total turnover for the meeting was £15,794 10s as compared with £17,381 for last year, a decrease of £1586 10s. The track was again in excellent order and the caretaker. Mr W. Gibbs, was the recipient of congratulations from numerous trainers on its condition. The principal event, the C. F. Vallance Memorial Handicap, resulted in a win for Yours Truly, vzhile the Waipipi Handicap was won by Gay Chou. In the Champion Hack the result was a dead-heat between Cohort and Cherry Picker.

Corroboree (Lord Qu ex—Table Talk), 7.2 (Mudford) 2 6 Mr L. E. George’s b. m. Winsome Lu (Raceful—Mariehau), 7.8 (gpratt) 3 Also started: 2 Mishna. 9.0 (Burgess); 3 Trebor, 8.3 (Wilson), 5 Hinerawe, 7.4 (Stowe); 7 Might, 7.54 (Foster). Won by a length and a half with a head between second and third. Time, 2,9 2-5. Might was fourth. (Winner trained by J. W. Lowe, Trentham.)
From the barrier Mishna jumped into the lead, followed by Trebor, Yours Truly and Hinerawe. Might was left badly. Into the back stretch the order remained the same, 1 but Yours Truly had moved into second place with Hinerawe a length back third. Then came Trebor and Corroboree. Seven furlongs from home Hinerawe hit the front, followed by Yours Truly, Mishna, and Trebor. Going round the top bend Corroboree moved up with the leaders Yours Truly and Hinerawe. Turning for home Yours Truly took over, closely followed by Corroboree, Trebor and Hinerawe. First into the straight were Yours Truly, Corroboree and Winsome Lu. At the distance Tattersall on Yours Truly was using the whip and Corroboree was going fast, but the favourite went on to gain a close decision. ' SPRING HANDICAP. 4 Mr A. Bennett’s ch. g. Le Toquet (Gainscourt-Provence), 7.13 (Baker) 1 6 Mr D. P. Clark’s br c Raratonga (Philamor-Spare Mom'e-nt), 7.6 (Midwood) 2 1 Mr H. B. Lorigan’s br c Gothic, (Doric—Sister Vamp), 7.8 ' (Midford) 3 (Winner trained by W. H. Corlett, Hastings). Also started: Mother-in-Law, 7.7 (Stowe), 5 Titter, 7.101 (Wilson), 6 Etzel. 7.8 (Chalinder). Won by a length with half a head between second and third. Mother-in-Law was fourth. Time 1.29. The first to show out from the barrier was Le Toquet, followed by Titter, Rarotonga and the favourite, Gothic. At the turn Mother-in-Law had taken command from Le Toquet, Gothic and Titter. As they straightened up for the run home, the leader was Mother-in-Law, with Le Toquet and Gothic close behind. The rest were bunched two lengths back. Halfway down the straight, Gothic challenged the leaders, but Le Toquet with a fine burst went to the front. Mother-in-Law fell away and Rarotonga, well ridden by Midwood, came through in grand style to beat Gothic for second money. WAIPIPI HANDICAP. 1 Mr B. Burgess’s b g Gay Chou Gay Lotharia-Chouette) 8.10 (Midwood) 1 5 Mrs M. Cusey’s br g Race Call (Unknown-Quinette), 8.0 (Spratt) 2 2Mr J. B. Fletcher’s ch g Royal i Star II (Vessington Star —Royal v Gala), 7.9 (Baker) 3 (Winner trained by owner, Opaki). Also started: 3 Flammarion, 8.12 (Burgess), Lucullus Lad, 8.11 (Jenkins), G Matoru, 7.0 (Stowe). Won by half a neck, with half a neck between second and third. Time I. Matoru was fourth. From a good start the first to show out was Lucullus Lad followed by Flammarion, Royal Star II and Gay Chou. Rounding the first turn Flammarion showed the way to Royal Star 11, and bunched in behind came Race Call, Lucullus Lad, Gay Chou and Matoru. Entering the straight Flammarion continued to head Royal Star IT. with Gay Chou making a slight move. With only 150 yards to go Gay Chou and Race Call came to the. fore. The latter making bold bid on the fence, just failed to head Gay Chou. CHAMPION HACK HANDICAP. 5 Mr W. Devon’s b g Colfort (Mel-fort-Columbia), 8.8 (A. Jenkins) 1 4 Mr F. Armstrong’s b g Cherry Picker (Chief Ruler-Cherry Pie), 8.4 (W. Jenkins) 1 3 Mr R. D. Vance’s br g Larwood Danilof —Nuherakau) 8.4 (Burgess) 3 Colfort is trained by A. Jenkins, Opaki, and Cherry Picker by A. C. Plummer, Dannevirke). Also started: 2 Morning Flight, 9.3 (Tattersall), 1 The Ring, 8.3| (Morris), 6 Girl Pat, 7.7 (Stewart), 7 Trench Law. 7.G (Foster), 8 Lady Cygnus, 7.104 (Wilson). The third horse was two lengths away. Time, 1.41 4-5. Trench Law and The Ring were slow away and after the field had covered a furlong the leaders were Cherry Picker and Colfort with a length away Morning Flight. At the first turn Cherry Picker shared the lead with Trench Law. Then came The Ring. After half the journey had been covered the leader was still Cherry Picker and 'a length back came Trench Law. Into the home straight the leader was Cherry Picker, closely followed by Trench Law and Girl Pat. At the distance, Cherry Picker was still in front, then Colfort, well; ridden by A. Jenkins challenged and the two battled for the decision for the rest of the way. So close were they as they passed the post that the judge could not separate.
FAREWELL HANDICAP. 5Mr J. Mulvaney’s br g Hasten . (Colossus—Miss Hastings), 7.4 (Midford) 1 1 Mr A. Bennet’s ch g Le Toquet (Gainscourt - Provence), 8.10 (Baker) .... 2 4 Mr H. B. Lorigan’s b g Acrobat (Barolong—Circus Star), 8.1 (Tattersail) 3 (Winner trained by I-I. Mawhinnie Feilding). Also started: 2 Sigurd ,9.0 (Nesbit), 3 Joe Louis, 8.5 (W. Jenkins). Won by a short head with three lengths between second and third. Sigurd was fourth. Time 1.15 1-5. The start was a good one, and the runners were bunched until the first turn was reached, where the first to show out was Sigurd, followed by Le Toquet and Acrobat. As the field rounded the turn the order was Sigurd, Le Toquet. Hasten, Joe Louis and Acrobat. Into the straight the order remained the same and at the distance Le Touquet commenced his run, Hasten, however, went with him and in a thrilling finish gained the decision.
