COLLEGE ORATORY

GIRLS’ INTER-SCHOOL CONTEST. SOLWAY TEAM PLACED FIRST. A particularly high standard of performance was achieved in the girls inter-school debate, held at Solway College on Saturday night. Teams of two each representing Solway College, Wairarapa College and St Matthew’s Collegiate School competed, those taking part and the subjects chosen in each case being: Solway College: June Hislop .“Admiral Byrd”; Patricia Blamires, “Sir Henry Wood.” Wairarapa College: Pat Baskiville, "Mary Queen of Scots”; Elaine Hanley, "Robert Emmett.” St Matthew’s School: Joan Wylie, “Amundsen”; Joyce Mulvaney, “Hans Andersen.” The judge. Mr D. L. Taverner, of Carterton, placed Solway first, with Wairarapa College a very close second. Commenting on the performances of the girls, Mr Taverner said they were very good indeed for a school oratory performance. Some of the girls, perhaps, memorised too much. It was a great thing, he said, to give a vivid picture of the personality described. The judge went on to refer to various points concerning deportment, material. presentation and enunciation.
