ST. PATRICK’S CARNIVAL

MISS KILMISTER HEADS POLL.

CLOSE OF SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN. The St. Patrick's Queen Carnival to raise funds for improvements to St. Patrick’s School, Masterton, and grounds was brought to a successful close by an enjoyable gathering in the Municipal Hall last night. A bazaar was held throughout the day. the wellstocked stalls all reporting brisk and profitable business. A baby contest held during the afternoon attracted good entries. Throughout the evening a real carnival spirit was in evidence, cabaret dancing, games, competitions, etc., being ably controlled by an energetic committee. At 10.30 o’clock the four scrutineers checked the last votes in the Queen contest. The winner and the other three competitors were then piped up the hall to the stage where Mr D. B. Curry (chairman) congratulated the winner, amidst applause and also the contestants who had put up such a good fight. Mr Curry also thanked the many willing helpers during the carnival, and announced that a crowning ceremony would be held at a later date. The voting in the Queen carnival was as follows: — Miss P. Kilmister (West), 69,647 votes, 1. Miss Maureen Eastwood (North), 49,468, 2. Miss K. Cairns (South), 47,589, 3. Miss Agnes Mannell (East), 34,090, 4. The baby contests resulted as follows: —Under six months, Robert Mooney, 1; Rodger Blake, 2. Six and under 12 months: Teddy Greaves, 1; A. Lahore, 2. One year and under 2: Jack Wallis, 1; Thelma Pearl Spicer,

The convenors of the various districts were: —North, Mrs W. H. Edwards; South, Mrs M. Thompson; East, Mrs E. Penson; West, Mrs A. J. Gordon. The secretary and treasurer was Mr E K. Eastwood, who carried out his duties in a very capable manner. The campaign for funds was a most successful and enjoyable one.
