FEATHERSTON COUNTY
MEETING OF COUNCIL DIVERSION OF MEN TO FARM WORK. IMPROVEMENTS AT GREYTOWN HOSPITAL. ("Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Featherston County Council was held at Martinborough today. Those present were the chairman (Mr A. B. Martin) and Councillors L. J. Thompson. R. W. Matthews. J. C. Bidwill. J. A. McLeod. D. Cameron. G. R. Gillies. R. Smith and Q. Donald. Letters were receiveci from the Martinborough and Greytown Borough Councils thanking the county for its grant of £5O towards their respective Centennial memorials. • The Department of Labour wrote asking that men at present employed under scheme 13 be diverted as soon as possible to scheme 4B work, which embraces farm development work. The Wairarapa Hospital Board advised that it was considering the repairing of the footpaths and driveway at the Greytown Hospital. The board requested a price for the supply of 8 to 10 cubic yards of bitumen preparation and also if the council would hire, when available, its tar plant for the purpose of sealing at the hospital and charges for the hiring of same. It was decided to supply the information. The Wellington-Nelson and Westland Local Bodies Labourers’ Union wrote asking the council to assist in the payment of employees’ union fees, where their employees were unable to pay such fees in advance as required by the union rules. The matter was held over for further investigation. The P. and T. Department advised that poles in the Knoll Cutting would be removed at an early date and that the council’s share of the cost would be £l2 17s. The matter was held over until the next meeting. The ranger reported having impounded six head of stock and registering three dogs. Accounts passed amounted to £5225.
